The Lost Distilleries of Banff

Banff Distillery has a long and storied history, dating back to the early 1700s. Originally a barley mill at the Mains of Colleonard by Major James McKilligan and his business partners, Alex Mackay and William Hodge, the site was converted into a distillery and officially founded 1824 following the whisky excise act.

Ownership of the distillery was transferred to Alex Mackay in 1837 and then Mr James Simpson in 1852. Despite several setbacks over the years, including a devastating fire in 1877, Banff Distillery has continued to produce exceptional whisky for nearly two centuries. The second Banff Distillery was closed and dismantled by 1983 with the final warehouse being destroyed in a fire in 1991.
